Proud owner of the iPhone? get ready to shell out 25 % more in bills

You may be one of those lucky Indians to have laid your hands on the legendary iPhone. But your joy may just be short-lived. The highly anticipated phone came at a huge price in the Indian markets and it just doesn’t stop there. The touch screen handset’s internet surfing capabilities is expected to raise its user’s monthly bills by 25 %, far more than other high-end mobiles in the market.

Romal Shetty, Executive Director of the research firm KPMG, mentioned, iPhone will increase its owner’s bills by more than 25-30 per cent of what they used to pay earlier, especially if he uses all the functions that the phone offers in the country.”

He also brought to notice that this latest gizmo even otherwise is too expensive, keeping it out of reach of most Indians.

Manoj Mohta, head of another analysis firm CRISIL Research, further pointed out, “Only after 3G comes in will the service providers launch more of data-oriented plans. But until then it will remain an expensive proposition.”

Telecom industry experts reveal that iPhone users should get ready to cough up nearly 25 to 30 % additional in billing charges. The two service providers Vodafone and Bharti Airtel who launched the iPhone in India are sure going to rake up some moolah. The service providers have designed some special iPhone-specific data plans mainly targeted to promote net surfing and aim to raise data usage.

On a plan of Rs 799 and Rs 999, Vodafone users can enjoy 250 MB and 600 MB respectively data usage free per month. On the other hand iPhone-specific plans will have a basic monthly rental of Rs 600 with free 500 MB per month for Bharti Airtel customers.

Telecom analysts, however assert that the current plans are just not economical enough. The bundling strategies of the plans are designed in such a way that they will encourage iPhone users to spend much more through their endless value added services (VAS).

An additional burden in terms of cost is the recurrent use of the iTunes to download content. The chief reason for this is the absence of Bluetooth services to transfer or get music from other phones. An Apple creation, the repeated use of this software is sure to dig a huge hole in your pocket.

With no availability of sufficient Indian specific content, the iPhone may actually be a real disappointment for Indian owners.

Grey market price of iPhone in india at Rs 20-26K

Grey market price of iPhone in indiaThe announcement by telecom service-providers Vodafone and Airtel that they were launching Apple’s iconic product, the iPhone, in India for their customers, has generated much excitement in the city’s grey market for electronics goods.

Grey market traders are confident that, contrary to the trend for other electronics goods, the availability of the iPhone in the official market would enhance sales in the grey market, too, and generate even more business than before. The iPhone is available on the grey market at much lower rates than its price in the official market.

Last week, Vodafone and Airtel had announced the launch of 8 GB and 16 GB versions of the iPhone in the official market at a price of Rs 31,000 and Rs 36,000, respectively. The companies have also started accepting bookings of this much-awaited product. The city’s grey market of electronics goods, however, is unperturbed by the competition because the gadget is available there at much lower prices.

Grey market traders said they had been selling iPhone for Rs 20,000 to Rs 26,000 but the gadget’s price had fallen slightly after Vodafone and Airtel announced its launch in the official market. The traders said they expected to sell many more iPhones because the electronic novelty was more expensive in the regular market.

“We are expecting higher sales because of iPhone’s launch in the official market,” said a mobile phone dealer of the city’s grey market. “We are offering 8 GB iPhones for Rs 20,000 to Rs 22,000 apiece and 16 GB iPhones for Rs 24,000 to Rs 26,000 apiece. It is possible to sell the gadget at such lower prices because telecom service providers in the US and UK sell the iPhone for Rs 8,000 to Rs 14,000 a piece provided the customers also subscribe to their telecom services. The iPhone they offer their customers is 'locked’ to their telecom services. This locked phone is brought to India by big players of the mobile market in Mumbai and Delhi where they are 'unlocked’ to be sold to local phone dealers.”

Another mobile phone dealer of the grey market said they are, currently, selling 15 to 10 iPhones per day. “We expect to sell more now,” he said. “Mobile phone users who switch to a new set every few months do not want to spend too much on every new mobile phone they purchase. They prefer buying from the grey market because they have to pay between Rs 5,000 and Rs 10,000 more in the official market.”

Many youth and businessmen are planning to get their iPhones from the US and UK. A youth said he had asked his relatives, who would be visiting India in winter, to get an iPhone for him. “I will then take it to one of the mobile repairers in the city’s grey market and get it 'unlocked’ for a fee. Currently, the repairers charge between Rs 1,500 and Rs 4,000 to unlock an iPhone. I will then have the iPhone for almost half its official price.”

Lulu Mall - Indias biggest shopping mall in kochi

The mammoth mall is expected to be completed by late 2008 or early 2009.

Lulu mall kochi
The UAE-based Lulu Group International has commenced construction of a mega shopping mall-multiplex-aviation tower and hotel complex at Kochi.

This would mark the entry of the Rs 4,500-crore Emke Group into the shopping and retail trade in India. The Lulu Group has over 70 shopping malls in the UAE and Gulf countries and has 16 offices worldwide.

Addressing a press conference, Mr Yusuffali, Managing Director of Emke Group of companies, said: “The iconic project is being built as per the best international specifications by world renowned consultants WS Atkins of UK and will house more than 300 national and international brands of fashion, jewellery, electronics lifestyle, home furnishing, furniture and accessories, bookshops and footwear. It will also have seven theatre multiplex, family amusement centre with bowling alley, six restaurants, 50,000 sq ft food court and coffee shops as well as other usual amenities.”

The project, estimated at a cost of Rs 1,200 crore, which is coming up on a 17-acre plot at a conjunction of three national highways has already incurred an expenditure of Rs 350 crore and will have a total built up area of 20 lakh sq ft. The project would also house a 300-room five-star hotel, which will be managed by the global brand, Marriot Hotels. With this, Marriot chain forays into Kerala.

Plans for an airlines and aviation tower are afoot on the lines of the Dubai National Air Travel building complex. The complex would house airline offices, travel agencies and other facilities related to travel. With the recent boom in Kerala’s economy, travel would be the next major growth area for the State. “This is the first of its kind specialty commercial space in the region and is sure to complement the tremendous growth taking place in this sector,” Mr Yusuffali said. The NRI segment would complement tourist inflow into the State and into the shopping complex as well. The project is expected to be a major tourist destination and is expected to attract close to 25 lakh tourists every year. This would be the first of its kind shopping mall-hotel-commercial building in the country and is slated to be completed by the year 2010. The project would provide direct employment to 6,000 people and indirect employment to another 20,000, Mr Yusuffali said.

iPhone Price cut in India?

iPhone Price cut in India?
Would you jump at an iPhone 3G if it cost a mere Rs. 2000 less? Engadget suggests such a price slash, but guess what - there's no such discount! At least, not yet. (Yes, what were they thinking?)

Surprised with the rumor, our source at Vodafone has confirmed that the company has not declared any such news. He added, "The (good) news would be conveyed by Apple, and not telecom operators affiliated with it."

Now, one can reasonably assume that most people who intend to purchase the iPhone for its current price aren't exactly counting their coins. What difference will a mere Rs. 2000 discount make to a prospective iPhone buyer?

We're sure Apple wouldn't want to do something as silly as altering its price soon after declaring it. However, recalling the precedent of the original iPhone price-drop (which didn't happen immediately after its release), the fall in the price of the latest iPhone is expected, if not inevitable. But how long do we wait for it?

Here is a Rs. 30,000 plus product that puts itself outside the range of just about everyone who wanted one. Do you think the early feedback has Vodafone/Airtel thinking differently on the iPhone's price?

Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 will be released on October 2008

Xperia X1, HTC touch diamond and apple iphone

Sony Ericsson's eagerly anticipated Xperia X1 Windows Mobile-based smartphone looks set to be released early October.

In a recent promotional email, retailer Expansys said that the "arc slider" handste will cost £590 ($1100/€740), SIM-free.

The launch date is still open to some interpretation, though. An Expansys spokesman told Register Hardware that although it’s received “a couple of demo units through from Sony Ericsson”, he still didn’t have a confirmed release date - despite the email.

On the plus side, the spokesman added that the arrival of demo units is a sure sign that the handset will be available to customers in the near future.

SE originally unveiled the Xperia X1 at the Mobile World Conference in Barcelona back in March, when it said only that the handset would be available sometime this year.

Xperia X1 has a 3in display, from under which a full Qwerty keyboard slides out. It provides 3G HSDPA and HSUPA connectivity, in addition to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. A 3.2-megapixel camera and Micro SD card slot are built-in too.

Disappointed with iphone price? wait for nokia full touch screen before 2008 end

Nokia, the Finnish cellphone giant has put to rest major contemplations surrounding its touch screen phone. A confirmation by one of the company’s executives reveals that a full touch screen handset should be launched of by the end of 2008.

Devinder Kishore, Nokia India’s marketing director, commented, “We have been working on the Series 60 platform for touch screen user interface and a mobile device is expected to be launched by the year-end. With the acquisition of Symbian, we will be able to offer our customers more innovative products and the latest technology.”

On being questioned about the fastest growing mobile operating system, Apple’s OS X, he further added, “Symbian is the largest mobile phone software developer globally and it is up to our customers to decide how popular and accepted our software is”

The device will be Nokia’s second full touch screen phone to be released as the company had earlier released a touch screen phone in 2003, but it was later discontinued. Not much is known about the features of the present handset except that it should support Java and allow photos to be uploaded to the web. There are also speculations that the phone will be a telly-centric one with support for the DVB-H mobile digital TV standard

The eagerly anticipated handset codenamed as the Tube should appear before this Christmas. Presently, the company has its hands set on a series 60 platform for the touch screen user interface. The device also appeared in the latest Batman movie “The Dark Knight”.

Kishore asserted the release of the Nokia Music store in India by 2008 end. The Nokia Music Store was launched by the company last year. He mentioned that the music store was doing really well in the UK and the company hopes its success will be matched in India as well.

After the success of the Apple iPhone, the past year has seen many cellphone majors such as Samsung and LG bringing their full touch screen mobile phones in the market. Research in Motion (RIM), the makers of Blackberry is next on the list to work on a full touchscreen phone codenamed ‘Blackberry Thunder’.

Though Nokia had earlier mentioned that the phone is in development, they never really confirmed its launch until now.

Why iPhone is having a high price in India than US?

The missing features if iphone 3G

1. Flash Support

The iPhone’s Safari browser still lacks support for Adobe Flash, so it seems connection speed wasn’t really the issue.

2. Cut-and-Paste

Nope. You still can’t copy-and-paste text in the iPhone.

3. Network Independent

There was no mention of offering the iPhone unlocked so that you can use it with your favorite GSM provider.

4. Video or a Better Camera

The iPhone 3G still sports a 2-megapixel camera with no video support. Nokia offers a 5-MP camera with very good video support, so why can’t Apple?

5. Landscape Email

Why can’t turn iPhone sideways to read emails?

6. Wi-Fi syncing

Although Mobile Me will go a long way towards syncing the information on my iPhone with my desktop, I still don’t understand why the iPhone can’t automatically sync itself when it connects to my home wifi network. Why the need for a USB cable?

7. iPhone Modem

Why can’t I use my iPhone as a modem? It connects to the internet via cellular and it connects to my Mac via USB or Bluetooth… Then, why can’t it patch me through to the Internet?

Airtel techies dare hackers to crack iPhone code

When it comes to iPhone hackers, techies at Sunil Mittal’s Bharti Airtel expect to have the last laugh. They claim even the most deadly hackers on the planet won’t be able to crack the codes that support the iPhone’s Airtel applications with rival company SIMs.

So, even if a hacker manages to make voice calls from an Airtel iPhone using the SIM of a rival GSM operator, he would be denied access to both exclusive icons—’Airtel Live’ and ‘Airtel Apps’—which are gateways to the full spectrum of Airtel applications built into the iconic gizmo.

This means a potential hacker of an Apple iPhones procured from Airtel won’t get to access either content or entertainment features on Airtel Live — a customised portal designed purely for Airtel subscribers. With no access to Airtel Live, he can’t access any text, audio, video, static images, music or gaming options available on the preloaded Airtel Live portal application. Neither does he get to use the powerful Google search engine.

Worse, the hacker also draws a blank if he tries activating any super secure applications like mobile payment (m-Chek) that can otherwise be accessed by Airtel users by clicking the ‘Airtel Apps’ icon on the iPhone. m-Check, would typically enable a user to manage his Airtel account or even do money transfers from his iPhone.

Confirming this, Bharti Airtel’s IT director Jai Menon, who is also chief information officer (CIO) of Bharti Enterprises, told ET: “Even if a hacker figures out a way to make voice calls from an iPhone procured from our stores using a non-Airtel SIM, he will not be able to access any of the ‘Airtel Live’ or ‘Airtel Apps’ features built into all the iPhones sold by Airtel. We’ve built in suitable levels of security to ensure both applications remain out of bounds for hackers. All iPhones distributed by Airtel will run on OSX (Version 2) OS which also powers Apple notebooks worldwide.”

He adds, “Airtel’s IT group has worked with Apple for over a year to uniquely evolve a bunch of operator-specific applications on the iPhone. In fact, Airtel is perhaps the only mobile operator besides Australia’s Optus that has evolved operator-specific applications on Apple’s iconic phone.”

Incidentally, “developing operator-specific iPhone applications was pretty much a stealth exercise that transpired by leveraging Airtel’s service delivery platform, which is a $100-million tech initiative,” said Mr Menon.

India hackers get cracking on Apple iPhone

Hackers across the country are working overtime to find ways to unlock the SIM cards that will come with Apple’s iPhone once it is launched at the stroke of midnight on August 22. Since the SIM-locked iPhone will be sold by Airtel and Vodafone Essar, non-Airtel /Vodafone GSM subscribers won’t be able to use it unless codes are available to break the SIM lock.
iphone unlocking, iphone 3G,

While Airtel and Vodafone Essar executives aren’t ruling out the likelihood of the much-hyped phone being hacked within days of its India launch, the companies were unwilling to comment on the safeguards that have been put in place to keep hackers at bay.

However, a brand new way to unlock the phone is now available, in case the hacking software doesn’t work. A mobile phone expert, speaking on condition of anonymity, told ET: “If your iPhone is loaded with 04.02.13_G, the 1.1.2 firmware (read: the latest version), it cannot be unlocked with any software. A Turbo SIM card, available for upwards of Rs 1,500, does what a hacking software cannot do even for the latest version of iPhone. The manufacturers are claiming it will not get locked again—an issue that plagued earlier hacking methods.”

The Turbo SIM may not be available in India immediately , but one can always order it online or even do a Google to unravel ways to use the card to unlock the iPhone. Airtel and Vodafone officials remain unfazed. “SIM lock-related issues will have obviously been addressed by Apple.

The phe-nomenon isn’t new as codes to break the iPhone SIM locks have evolved in global markets where the phone has been launched. One cannot rule out such a phenomenon in India. But since the iPhone is being offered at a full-blown price in India, all network-related issues will have been factored in,” said a top Airtel executive.

Officials at Vodafone said: “We are launching the 3G iPhone in two variants—8 GB and 16GB. The operating system is proprietary of Apple and we cannot share any further details.” While both Vodafone and Airtel execs remain tightlipped on the actual operating system/version that will power the iPhone in India, ET has learnt the phone may be launched with the latest iPhone 2.0 software update.

If you are not an Airtel or Vodafone Essar user but are still keen to use the phone, you first need to find out the version of your iPhone. To find out the firmware (version ), open the emergency call menu on the iPhone and type *3001#12345#*, suggests a software spe-cialist .

Detailed instructions are available online, but the process basically involves copying the information from your SIM onto a Turbo SIM, and then switching your SIM for your carrier SIM. This al-lows the Turbo SIM to piggyback on your carrier SIM, and report-edly gives the phone full calling, SMS and EDGE capabilities. For older versions of the software, a quick search on Google will throw up a number of ways to unlock the SIM. Such software is freely avail-able on the internet.

OMG! 8GB iPhone to cost Rs 31,000?

Elsewhere across the globe the new version of iPhone was launched in the range of $200 dollars (about Rs 8500). But this was mainly due to the subsidies offered in tie-up with service providers who bank upon the VAS to be offered to iPhone users.

8 GB version of the 3G iPhone will cost Rs 31,000, while the 16 GB version will cost between Rs 36,000–37,000 in India.
The wait finally seems to be over. According to reports, the pricing of the most-awaited gadget Apple iPhone, set to be launched in India on August 22, is out.

Reports indicate that the 8 GB version of the 3G iPhone will cost Rs 31,000, while the 16 GB version will cost between Rs 36,000–37,000.

The above pricing is exclusive of the rental plan the phone will come bundled with.

Last week Bharti Airtel and Vodafone announced that they will launch iPhone on August 22.

In a statement, Bharti said that millions of Airtel subscribers will be able to purchase the iPhone at Airtel's Relationship Centres from August 22.

"iPhone has been an iconic technological revelation of this year and Airtel has been at the forefront of innovation and customer delight in the Indian telecom sector," Sanjay Kapoor, President, Bharti Airtel mobile services, said.

iPhone is embedded with all 3G features and is twice as fast as the existing mobile phones. The phone also has in-built GPS system, which facilitates as navigation and positioning tool.

Alexa no longer counts traffic that a site gains from social media sites like Digg and Reddit

Alexa no longer counts traffic that a site gains from social media sites like Digg and Reddit. For people whose traffic Last two to three weeks have been good due to social media buzz, they have noticed that it had no relative change on alexa.

For 2-3 weeks, Alexa has not been reflecting digg or reddit spikes. This is widespread. Spikes only occur on those sites whose articles went viral on non-social media sites after the digg or reddit pop. Sites made exclusively around social media promotion have been stagnant and even falling on their rank. It seems that Alexa wants to be a tool used by advertisers. And advertisers know that social media traffic is worth lesser than search and repeat visitor traffic. Also we all know that Social media traffic does not convert.

Abhinav Bindra win Gold Medal in Beijing Olympics 2008

Abhinav Bindra Olympics gold medal ceremony

Abhinav Bindra Wins Gold For India - Video

Abhinav Bindra won the gold medal in men's 10 metre air rifle event of the shooting competition at Beijing Olympics on Monday morning.

The medal is India's first individual gold, and the first since 1980, when the hockey team emerged triumphant in Moscow.

Bindra shot a total score of 700.5.

China's Zhu Qinan, gold medalist at Athens 2004, won the silver medal with a total score of 699.7.

The bronze medal was won by Finland's Henri Hakkinen, who was leading the field after the qualification round, but was unable to hold off Bindra and Zhu in the final.

Abhinav Bindra

Abhinav Bindra (born September 28, 1982) is an Indian shooting sports person and businessman. He is the CEO of Abhinav Futuristics. As a shooter, he specialises in the field of Air rifle. In August 2008, he became the first Indian to win an individual gold medal at the Olympic Games and first gold medal since 1980 for India.

Abhinav Bindra was the youngest Indian participant at the 2000 Olympic Games. He won six gold medals at various international meets in 2001. In the Air rifle event at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, Manchester, he won Gold in the Pairs event and Silver in the individual event. At the 2004 Olympic Games, he broke the Olympic record but failed to win a medal. He is a recipient of the Arjuna award in 2001 and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award for the year 2001-2002. Abhinav Bindra's potential talent was first spotted by Lt. Col. J.S. Dhillon. He was Bindra's first coach. Apart from being a shooter, Abhinav Bindra holds an M.B.A. (Masters in Business Administration). He is also the CEO of Abhinav Futuristics.

At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Abhinav Bindra won the gold for the Men's 10m Air Rifle final after shooting a total of 700.5, thus becoming the first Indian individual gold medallist ever at the Olympics. He scored 596 (fourth) in the qualifying round and out-scored all other shooters in the finals with a round of 104.5.

How do I get back to force Internet Explorer to be the default browser after Firefox 3 has been installed?

Try this:

1. Go to Start > Run > Enter control inetcpl.cpl
2. Click the Programs tab
3. Check the option for IE to tell you if it's not default.

Then use Set Program Access/Defaults to set Firefox as default, then switch it back to IE. Sometimes it needs to have another one set before it takes.

Good luck!

Setting default browser manually

You can set the default browser in Windows 2000 (SP3+) Windows XP (SP1+) and Windows Vista using the "Set Program Access and Defaults" feature (renamed "Set Program Access and Computer Defaults" in Windows Vista).

  • Windows 2000: "Start -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs -> Set Program Access and Defaults"
  • Windows XP: "Start -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs -> Set Program Access and Defaults -> Custom"
  • Windows Vista: "Start -> Default Programs -> Set Program Access and Computer Defaults -> Custom"

(Windows XP/Vista: Click the icon to the right of "Custom", to expand the category.)

You will see Internet Explorer and other installed browsers listed under "Choose a default Web browser" . Select "Mozilla" (Suite), "SeaMonkey" or "Mozilla Firefox" (in some cases, "Mozilla Firefox" may not be listed; to add it back, reinstall Firefox).

If the above doesn't work or if the "Set Program Access and Defaults" feature isn't available in your Windows version, you can manually set the default browser by selecting it as the the default program for individual file types and protocols as follows:

  • Windows XP and earlier: Open the Control Panel from the Windows Start menu.
    • In Windows 2000 and earlier, or if Windows XP is using the Control Panel "Classic View": Click on "Folder Options -> File Types".
    • In Windows XP, if using the Control Panel "Category View": Click on "Performance and Maintenance". Then, click on "File Types" in the left column under the heading "See Also".
  • Windows Vista: Click the Start button, open "Default Programs" and then click "Associate a file type or protocol with a program".

Assign the following protocols and file types to the browser you wish to set as default:

  • URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol
  • URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy
  • URL:File Transfer Protocol
  • HTML File
  • HTM File (optional)

Note that you may find the URL protocols listed above under extension "N/A" or "(NONE)".

Why you cant use Mobile at petrol station?

But what about this report by BBC

Petrol station mobile risk 'myth'

The commonly-held belief that turning on a mobile phone in a petrol station can cause an explosion could be a myth, researchers have said.

Dr Adam Burgess, of the University of Kent, will present his findings to a conference later this week.

He will say that out of 243 petrol station fires attributed to mobiles around the world in the last 11 years, not one was caused by a handset.

Researchers said static electricity from the body caused many of the fires.
